Newsletter 46 – Amcor advocates sustainability and renewable energy from its plant located in Palmira – Valle

Back in the month of March, Amcor, the biggest bottle company in the world, in coordination with ‘Celsia Energia’, launched an 8.8 Megawatts solar farm located in its Palmira, Valle del Cauca plant. This inauguration was partnered by Invest Pacific, ProColombia, and some of the company’s clients, during the event, that included a tour around the solar farm and plant -the larger, most complex, and the one that performs as the company’s technological lab.

According to Amcor, the solar farm features more than 16,000 solar panels to supply 20% the energy used by the company in Colombia, and 32% the energy of its Palmira plant. Such is its coverage, that said quantity of generated energy would equal the one needed to service 6,000 residences at the same time.

This project would allow the production of more sustainable bottles, using more than 1,000 tons of recycled material a month, which will then become food grade PET, thus preventing the emission of nearly 7,400 tons of CO2 a year, which equals the environmental footprint of 1,2 Million trees.

Amcor is a multinational manufacturing rigid packaging and settled in Valle del Cauca to encourage plastic production in the cleanest manner, and featuring clients from a variety of industries such as Bavaria, Coca-Cola Femsa, Alpina, Johnson & Johnson, Unilever, among others.

“We are very excited to partner Amcor’s project, which aims to the planet’s sustainability and a cleanest plastic production, which incidentally positions Valle del Cauca as a hub for plastic bottle manufacturing in Latin America. It is very important that companies such as this come to our region, and continue to find the human talent and providers network needed to forward these high-impact projects”, stated Mauricio Concha, Investment Manager of Invest Pacific’s Manufacturing Sector.

The solar farm investment is part of Amcor strategy to keep on growing and delivering a complete bottle service to the whole country. Moreover, the company has reported an investment of more than 30 Million USA dollars for the last ten years of its Palmira plant, to have the most comprehensive farm and the biggest packaging plant to serve the whole country.

With the opening of the solar farm, Amcor reaffirms its commitment with Valle del Cauca and the manufacturing of more sustainable bottles.
